BUWOG signs new klimaaktiv pact

10/19/21
  • Voluntary commitment to reduce CO2 emissions 57 percent by 2030
  • Pioneering role for sustainability in housing construction and real estate management
  • Innovative sustainability strategy combines climate friendliness with housing quality

BUWOG was one of just eleven large Austrian companies and the only real estate enterprise to be accepted as a partner in the Federal Ministry for Climate Action’s new klimaaktiv pact. With yesterday's signing of the pact, which covers the period through 2030, the company commits to halving its CO2 emissions by 2030. BUWOG has set itself an even more ambitious reduction target of 57 percent. In order to achieve this, a number of measures are being implemented. The majority of the CO2 reduction will be achieved by modernising and improving existing buildings, in particular by thermal renovation, increasing heating efficiency and switching to more environmentally friendly energy sources. In new construction, only properties with the lowest energy status will be built; accompanying measures such as greening and environmentally friendly mobility solutions (charging stations, rental bikes, bicycle parking spaces) will contribute to a further improvement in sustainability.

"By participating in the klimaaktiv pact, we subject all of our measures in the area of ecological sustainability to strict and comprehensive external control,” BUWOG Managing Director Valerija Karsai explains. “This is an important support for us to continuously optimise our sustainability strategy and evaluate new opportunities. Furthermore, we are making our pioneering role in climate protection transparent and hope we can motivate as many other real estate companies as possible to reduce their CO2 emissions as well.”

Karsai emphasises that climate protection and housing quality must go hand in hand: “Innovative sustainability strategies do not mean any restrictions for tenants and owners. On the contrary, they make a decisive contribution to the quality of housing and life. This has been particularly successful, for example, in the ERnteLAA project, where residents have extensive possibilities for urban gardening and even three greenhouses available to them on their green rooftop terrace. “Every day, the residents see how sustainability directly contributes to their quality of life. This win-win situation for the environment and apartment users is the basis for successfully achieving long-term climate change in housing.
