BUWOG's sustainable commitment: impressive results for the klimaaktiv Pakt2020

BUWOG is committed to greater climate protection in the building sector. As the only real estate company in the klimaaktiv Pakt2020, it has a pioneering role.

BUWOG is delighted to be the only Austrian real estate company to have successfully participated in the klimaaktiv Pakt2020. At the end of the project phase, the results are thoroughly positive: the minimum targets set for 2020 for effective climate protection and sustainable management have been significantly exceeded. At the margins of the klimaaktiv Dialogue 2020 with Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler, BUWOG Managing Director Valerija Karsai expressed pride and satisfaction: “As a partner to the pact, we recognised the need to rethink climate change and took responsibility years ago. Our commitment very clearly shows that climate protection and running a successful business can be combined."

Climate-friendly future as target

In 2011, 12 large Austrian companies, including BUWOG, committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions 16 percent by the end of 2020, boosting energy efficiency by at least 20 percent and using at least 34 percent renewable energy sources.

It has now been announced that in the period from 2005 to 2020, the companies were able to jointly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent, boost their energy efficiency by 33 percent and increase the use of renewable energy sources to a full 60 percent. The companies reduced their CO2eq (CO2 equivalent) by 2.2 million tonnes. That is an average of 144,000 tonnes of CO2eq per year. This corresponds to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of around 85,000 cars or 21,000 oil-powered boilers in single-family homes.

“The building sector is the second largest cause of environmentally harmful emissions in Austria. This requires us to continue to work on even more efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions in our business areas of development and portfolio management. We are on the right track with our multiple-award-winning flagship projects," Karsai says. Part of this path is to be renewed collaboration with klimaaktiv in the scope of the klimaaktiv Pakt2030. Another potential cooperation is currently in preparation.
