Outstanding sustainability: BUWOG customer and administrative centre wins ÖGNI certificate in gold

The new BUWOG office building at Rathausstraße 1 in Vienna's 1st district was recently awarded a prize for its comprehensive concept of sustainability: the "Austrian Sustainable Building Council" (ÖGNI) presented the certificate in gold, thereby recognising BUWOG's commitment to sustainable project development.

A few months following the opening of the new BUWOG customer and administrative centre, the project has now received official recognition of its considerable qualities of sustainability. ÖGNI management presented the certificate to BUWOG on Monday, 21 September 2020 together with the auditors of bauXund forschung und beratung gmbh and OTEREA GmbH (formerly Ecotech Building Solution GmbH). Daniel Riedl, member of the Management Board of Vonovia SE who is responsible for all BUWOG operations in Austria, was extremely pleased after accepting the award: "From the very beginning, we focused on the highest standards of sustainability in this project in order to assume a pioneering role with our new location. A large number of people have worked hard for this fantastic award, and I would like to thank the entire project team and all those who have been involved over the last few years."

Award for a wide range of qualities

The ÖGNI certification was carried out by specialists for building certification, the Vienna offices bauXund Ecotech Building Solution, in accordance with the international quality criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). A variety of subjects were evaluated during the examination. In addition to the fairly substantial level of ecological and economic quality, Rathausstrasse 1 was particularly persuasive in "social-functional quality" and in the categories "process quality" and "location quality". "The certification of this city-centre landmark in the immediate vicinity of Parliament and City Hall was a very special assignment for us," both bauXund Managing Director Dr. Thomas Belazzi and Ecotech Managing Director Wolfgang Lukaschek state. "Now successfully completed, ÖGNI's building certification in gold is proof of the manifold qualities of BUWOG's new headquarters."

From energy efficiency to environmentally friendly mobility

Designed by the consortium Schuberth Schuberth / Stadler Prenn / Ostertag with Atelier Heiss responsible for the interior design, the building was developed with the greatest attention to the use of sustainable building materials as well as product and chemical management for measurably healthy indoor air. bauXund supported the execution and ensured the integration of the construction project's ecological specifications, the ÖGNI criteria, for all subcontractor services. The careful use of resources was already evident in the demolition of the previous building: all recyclable components were reused for a new function. In addition to the sustainable heat supply through district heating, a highly efficient cooling system including a ventilation system featuring heat recovery was also installed in the new building. The entire building is enclosed by a double façade which supports this and acts as a thermal buffer during the heating period. A part of the electricity demand can be covered by solar energy: every available space on the rooftop of the new customer and administrative centre has been covered with photovoltaic panels (capacity: 26 kWp).

The new customer and administrative centre provides BUWOG employees with a total of 108 bicycle parking spaces, bicycles and electric bicycles for business trips and eight charging stations for electric cars. All employees can also obtain a "job ticket" from Wiener Linien at no charge.
