Topping out for HELIO TOWER

  • 110 m tower with 34 floors in urban development area “The Marks”

HELIO TOWER, one of BUWOG's largest projects currently under construction, reached an important milestone last week with the topping out – its shell was completed a full 11 weeks ahead of schedule. The residential tower with 34 floors above ground has now reached its full height of 110 metres – without the traditional topping out because of the coronavirus, though the equally traditional payment for the topping out was handed over to the employees involved in the building’s construction.

With a substantial share of subsidised apartments, HELIO TOWER is an unusual feature among the residential towers currently under construction in Vienna. Of the total of 401 residential units of 39 to 124 sqm, 228 are condominiums on upper floors 16 to 33. The 173 rental apartments under the Vienna Housing Initiative are being built from the 1st to the 15th floor.

The property is a central element of the urban development area “The Marks” on the former MGC Plaza site in Vienna's 3rd district. Inspired by the sun god Helios, the name of the tower stems from the creative architecture, which ensures plenty of light and sun for the residents, especially due to high ceilings and extensive windows, and makes the open areas of the apartments usable at all times due to glass windbreaks that can be opened. During construction, special emphasis was placed on sustainability, for example through a sustainable mobility concept: In what for Austria is a unique bicycle arcade, there is space for 2,000 bicycles site-wide. A car-sharing model with electric cars and city bikes as well as electric cargo bikes also ensure a readily available offer of environmentally friendly mobility across the site. In addition, up to 27 charging stations with smart load management are available in the BUWOG garage area alone.

“The combination of privately financed condominiums and rental apartments under the Vienna Housing Initiative will also ensure a favourable demographic mix featuring residents from every age group and in a variety of family situations,” BUWOG Managing Director Andreas Holler says. “This will make the tower even more attractive, especially for urban target groups who appreciate the proximity to the centre, the modern mobility solution and the direct proximity to the event hall under construction nearby. This concept has been well received and approximately a year ahead of completion, 71 percent of the condominiums have already been sold.”
